I don't know about everybody else, but I love Winter. I love the snow. I love bundling up to go out in the cold. I love the crisp air. It's something that I've been around my entire life, being a girl who was born and raised in New England, it's just something that I am used to.
When it comes to Winter and kids, things get a little hectic. Getting kids bundled up to go out is a totally different situation. That is NOT fun. Having them out in the snow is alright for a little while but then enters the whining about cold hands and chappy lips, snow in their boots or they have to pee. It's just sort of a personal nightmare.
I have decided to compile a list of great indoor activities, including places to go, and some short-lived outdoor activities as well. Although, I do encourage you to spend one hour outside each day, and follow the 1,000 Hours Outside movement on Instagram!
Indoor Play places |
JJ's Playhouse - Located in East Weymouth on Middle Street, JJ's is one of the newer establishments and the FIRST play place for kids in the Town of Weymouth (if you don't count McDonald's indoor playplace). They can accommodate ages 0-12 with soft play, slides, low to the ground swings, climbing structures, a train table, sensory toys, sensory table, and magnetic fort building. Make sure to check out JJ's if you need a place to let those kids run out some energy! Don't forget your grippy socks!!
The Children's Museum of Easton - Located in North Easton, the children's museum has a three floors of fun for kids! The bottom floor is where they hold their ''maker space'', kids are welcome to join in on craft making, dinosaur play and more. On the main floor there is plenty of pretend play, with some science play thrown in-make sure to check out the golf ball track-you won't regret it! On the upper floor you're met with themed rooms like doctor's office, food trucks, STEAM room, camping and interactive floor mats. Currently the outside space is being worked on but we are hoping it will be finished by the Summer, and we will update our readers!
Maplewood Country Day Camp - This fun place is also located in Easton! Maplewood has a huge space, with plenty of things for kids to do! Each day they have a specialty program and character visit. The specialty programs vary, things like Facepainting, Reptile shows, Animal shows, Balloon Twisting and more! Maplewood has a morning session [9:30am-12pm] and an afternoon session [1pm-5pm]. The space honestly is great for all ages but they recommend 7 and under. No shoes in here, so don't forget grippy socks!
Central Rock Gym - Located in Randolph, Central Rock Gym is a massive rock climbing facility for kids and adults. They have a smaller rock climbing area with themed climbs for the kiddos in your life, and bigger climbing areas for the brave bodies! Make sure to reach out to them beforehand and make sure to book your climb time!
Space Zero - Located inside the South Shore Plaza in Braintree, Space Zero is a trampoline park mixed with an arcade. Nestled right outside of Nordstrom on the first floor, it's very easy to locate - just look for the bright neon sign!!
Indoor Activities |
Scavenger Hunt - Give your kids a baggie to fill up and a list of things to find around the house. No need to go hide them, just put together a list of five or six items.
Self Portraits - Hand them some paper and crayons, let that creativity flow! Encourage them to draw what they look like. You may have to draw a circle on the page to be the head they fill in.
Paint with your toes - This one is a little silly, but a family favorite at my house! I put paper on the floor, chairs in front of the paper, and little cups about a quarter full with washable paints. The kids then take their shoes and socks off, I place a paint brush between their toes and they make a masterpiece!! It's so silly and gets some laughs going, and they're always surprised with what they can imagine their painting is of!
Film a ''movie'' - I sometimes let my kiddos use my phone to make movies with their dollhouse, bracelet making, slime making and more. They love the ability to make their own ''show''
